OK so here's an update:
I downloaded a spanking new kernel (2.6.12.5)
broke me a new one
compiled the nvidia-kernel
got X working
now it crashes after a few minutes (pc still functional, ssh etc - can
stop gdm etc)
no xinerama still
also tried twinview - no go
:(
now back to old kernel running "nv"
almost time to try ATI card :)
