I don't know if the other suggestions have fixed this - but I found
that the latest nvidia drivers broke with 3d acceleration (Xorg would
crash whenever I tried to run anything with 3d accel - eg glxgears,
glxinfo). I had to switch back to the previous version of the driver
to fix the issue. This might be related to my particular card
(geforce2) but I was running on a 2.6.12 kernel with Debian Testing.
