Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but unless this were a server-side
application / module wouldn't you still have to download the contents of
the jpeg in order to convert them?

If the module is run on the local PC to convert the images before they
are displayed, but the bandwidth usage would be the same.

Alternatively, if you have access to the server to install such a
module, why not just create a low bandwidth version of the page?

The alternative solution to this problem, I believe Chris, is something
I used to do in Internet Explorer back in 97 / 98 on low speed
connections (28.8kbps or slower) and that is to turn off images and only
download them when you choose to with a right-click. I don't know if
FireFox has the same option, but it must be there somewhere - don't
forget to check out about:config and see what extra options exist.
