Replying to my own email :) First sign of madness....
How about plugins/whatever for the major file browsers (konq, mc, etc) which
will trap the opening of unknown files, extract the file magic, and connect to
a site to get recommendations based on the magic, distro, installed lib
versions, rpm/apt-get database etc. This makes the process dependent on an
internet connection being active though....
