Sounds like an interrupt problem to me. In your BIOS turn off everything relating to sound and usb, comm ports, onboard nic and etc. Then turn each one on one at a time starting with the sound, if you want to go with the SBLive! then of course leave the sound off.
Also run lspci to see if there are any conflicts.

I'm having some really debilitating audio problems on my Ubuntu 5.10
PC since I swapped the main board and CPU out.
The Pc used to have a SBLive! installed but I decided to go with the
onboard card (basically AC97).
Now my ESD locks up gnome, so then i thought I'd stick my SBLive! back
in it but now it locks up at the post screen, whatever slot I put it
into.
If I put the SBLive! in another machine, no problems..

and idea's guys?
