In desparation tried an unemerge and a re-emerge but to no avail.   At 
least I can consistently connect from the machine itself as the vanilla 
user.   Has to be some wierd authentication thing and I don't want to leave 
/etc/hosts.deny empty - which was one suggested resolution I saw tonight on 
the 'net.  Sigh.   I'm going home now!   Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!
