Ok heres the deal. I tried to update to dovecot last night. Didnt work.
Broken. Kaput etc.

Aftre much gnashing of teeth I tracked it down to some wierd glibc
incompatibility (serves me right for using oddball sources I guess) and
decided to revert to uw-imap.

uw-imap wont cant dont and will not auth anyone.

track that down to the clib20002e lib. aparently due to plaintext being
bad the maintainer has 'broken' plaintext on purpose to make folks use
ssl.

problem being is all our clients use normal.

so back to dovecot. try difreent sources.

no luck.

So I go back to the original sources and figure the best fix for lib
mismatch is to rebuild from sources

apt-get -b source dovecot-imapd (or something like that)

blammo! dependencies not available.

The phone is rinnging about every ten minutes with "shaaayne , my email is
broken!"

in the end this was the "fix" and by "fix" I mean "less broken" and "more
screwy" and even "will need to return to this issue one day!"

I reverted back to the original woody sources and grabbed dovecot &
dovecot-pop3d . Note no imap.

start it up, no workies. So off a home server I have dovecot on, I grab
the binaries for the imap part of the server and its support libs.

boot it up. it all works.

so now everyone is reading email again, but if my server was my a human it
would be crying for the hangman on account of such a crime against package
management.

at some point I'll find a d
