I cheated a little when I did this I downloaded the rpm
ftp://ftp.xmms.org/pub/xmms/1.2.x/rpm/fc1/xmms-1.2.10-1.i386.rpm
or http://www.xmms.org/files/1.2.x/rpm/fc1/xmms-1.2.10-1.i386.rpm

when done then open a shell and go superuser (su)
and type rpm -i /path/to/xmms-1.2.10-1.i386.rpm
make sure to use tab for command completion

Sorry that I cannot help with the environmental settings
