I recently installed the nvidia driver from, well, nvidia. If memory serves me correctly, and you are using the single binary (?) nvidia driver, the readme's tell you that you should comment out the "load dri" line in the modules section of your xf86config-4. 

I think this is something to do with dri being directly implemented in the nvidia driver.
