Thanks Jim,

In Alsamixer, I find the following

Line-In As Surround [Off]   and
Mic As Center/LFE [Off]

OK scrap all I've said up above I had to use alsamixer (not Kmixer) and
the "Center" control was muted. A quick "man alsamixer" to unmute, and
it was sweet again.
