[plug] Live CD's and eth0

Hi All
Playing around with live CD's on an old PII 400 Mhz I get this.
Knoppix 3.9 the CD freezes at dchp broardcast IP after detecting
eth0.Will load completely if NIC is removed.
Simply Mepis loads no problem and I can access mozilla to send
this email.
Ubuntu 5.04 takes for ever to load but detects eth0.I don't know
if it will run Mozilla as after 10mins I gave up and swiched the machine
off.
Could someone explain why the two later cd's(ubuntu and knoppix)
have trouble.
Also is there some work around for the knoppix problem as I would like
to get it working.
