gcalctool (which I've never used before but is under Accessories in
Gnome) has a 'Show thousands separator' option (Ctrl-k). As of 4.4.20
which is what I have, it doesn't work :) ...
... because according to the manual:
"The separator character is not displayed when you use the C locale."
