I, too, have that modem.  The only times I have the stated problem is 
when the modem needs to be reset.  Twice last month, but now it has a 
surge protector.

Which leads me to ask:  Is the modem configured correctly?  Enter 
192.168.1.1 in your browser address bar and hit enter.  You should be 
asked for a username and password, which default to admin and password. 
  As it will be the modem that logs you in to your isp, it needs your 
account username and password I think.  Also IIRC bridge mode needs to 
be off.
