I have 2.2 installed, in which you just need to ensure Antialiasing is
checked in the Fuzzy Select window when you use the contiguous region
select tool (Z).  If the Fuzzy select tab does not appear, double click
the contiguous region tool.  Playing around with the threshold might
bring sharper results too.

I just had a play with the selection tools in 2.2 as I haven't used the
Gimp for a fairly long time.  They certainly void excrement over
Photoshop now, I was pleasantly surprised :)
