Tell her the truth, and let her know that you will take her out to get a new one - when she is 
ready (that is if she wants another - let her choose).

Even at her young age she will appreciate your honesty - as you would certainly appreciate her 
honesty.

The loss of a pet is a serious matter to a young child - but herein also lies a truly valuable 
lesson for life.

Death is a fact of life.
