[plug] Strange dns/ip issue

Hi everyone..
My laptop, which I ran an hd-install of knoppix, then apt-get update
blah blah blah...
has a strange issue with resolving DNS or retaining IP info, I'm not
sure which (seems more likely to be an ip issue.
If I ping a name for resolution, or an ip address, I can then access
that address using normal http means. Unfortunately the first ping
takes a very long time, and it seems that normal http times out in the
time for this to resolve.
Just across my network at home, I can png my other box, run an ssh
connection to it. be working away quitehappily, then lose the
connection for no obvious reason other than this ip issue.
I'm using dhcp at home, though I'm not sure if the appropriate config
files are happy or not (I'm guessing not)
resolv.conf has single entry pointing to router's ip address.
Using DHCP on a friends network also, I experienced the same issue.
Any suggestions?
(Otherwise a clean Gentoo install is sounding preferable as I'm more
familiar with gentoo over apt based distros, and I can probably mimic
most of my current gentoo installation's config.)
Cheers,
Julian
