At least this one is a wrapper around sensible package systems, not a
reinvented hexagonal wheel.

BTW, a few references about autopackage which I was trying to find at
the last PLUG talk:

  http://kitenet.net/~joey/blog/entry/autopackage_designed_by_monkeys-2005-03-28-14-20.html

"From my point of view, the autopackage format is mainly notable
for being an executable shell archive type format with as far as I
can see, no formal design documentation." [...]
    "Worst. Package. Format. Ever."

  https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8308

"autopackage is not nearly suitable for Ubuntu's packaging
requirements, and in general there are better ways of solving the
problems that it tries to address, within the Ubuntu packaging
system. Our efforts will be better spent improving Ubuntu's
packaging system than trying to integrate with autopackage."

  http://www.licquia.org/archives/2005/03/27/autopackage-considered-harmful/

"If something is installed by Autopackage, and later that same
thing is shipped by Debian, the two packages will barf all over
each other, causing both packages to fail (despite their
    unsubstantiated claim otherwise)."

  http://wiki.lugradio.org/index.php?title=Episode_25/Transcript&redirect=no
(Search for Autopackage, there's an interview with one of the
  developers defending against Joey's criticism.)

"Once you sort through all the crap, his point seems to be that
you can't parse it with alien. Which isn't something we care about
    at all."

Cameron.
