Powerpoint?  Is this under windows?  If so, then go with Tsunami MPEG 
at  http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html.  As long as you have the right 
codecs for whatever the avi is encoded with, then tmpgenc will convert 
it.  Plenty of options for size/quality/etc too.
