You need to set the mail_check and timeout variables lower.  I have 

  set timeout=60
  set mail_check=180

when reading imap from imaps.bur.st, and remember setting those
because I had the same problem.  I don't really understand the
difference between these two, but that works for me.  You may need
differnet values than these.
