[plug] installing mandriva

I have given up on Mandriva. I have had a new hard drive put in just for 
linux. Tried Suse10 but got error message.
Could not find Kernal image linux 64.
Last resort I tried ububtu5.10. installed beautifully but wouldnt 
reboot. tried again so now have 2 copies on hard drive.
Also lost windows. Friend got windows back
It dual boots but ububtu comes up with a command line not a desktop! and 
I dont know what to put. Its all there but I cant get at it.
