Well, I pulled everything I could budge out it, and gave up about 0200 
and went to bed.  Later this morning (ie now) it's booted fine and 
appears to working 100%.  I've rebooted it several times and there 
appears to be no detectable problem at all.  I have learned one valuable 
lesson however, and that is, "RTFM /BEFORE/ the disaster".
