Yep its usually the best way.. What I'd do is get prices on the expensive
side (http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/ is a great resource as they have a TON
of stock, but their prices aren't fantastic). And then build the same from
a local bunch and see how much you can save.

What I've done in the past if I'm really scraping the bottom of my jean
pockets for cash is price match all the places in Osbourne Park like
Netplus, Austin, etc. They're all about 30 seconds drive from each other
and if you're prepared to you can usually save a fair bit.. PLE is great
for all the small things, keyboard/mice, media, monitors and speakers, etc
so they're usually a good place to buy all the extra's if you can be
bothered with the drive!

Noone mentioned it before, but if you're still looking for a standalone
machine capable of playing games your best bet is any of the Alienware range
(now owned by Dell)... They make laptops/workstations with about as much
gaming goodness you can cram into the one machine (Dual Core - Conroe/A64,
Dual/Quad/SLI Nvidia Graphics Cards/Fast RAM etc, etc). They're definitely
not cheap though.
