Sincere thanks for the thoughts on this problem.

I will on the morrow consult with principal researcher and establish just 
what level of trust / cooperation with assistants we can expect.   Most 
researchers worth their furrowed brows should respect the confidentiality 
of the data so the setuid/gid path may do what I want.   Although I hear 
the concerns about using a stats package as a sort of filter.

Interestingly I had begun down the path of a terminal-like session, using 
cygwin/X on Windows PCs.   Got the cygwin part happening this afternoon on 
my XP Pro box but the X11R6 directory structure is pretty much bare 
:-(   That just may give me the arms-length isolation I need.

"Fuse-based" file system?   New one on me, have to look into that.
