He certainly was. He wanted to prove that lightening was electricity, 
used a silk thread as a kite string and tied a house key near the end. 
Then he used the back of his hand to get a spark from the key to his hand.

Very bloody dangerous if you ask me, and he lived to tell the tale, but 
then in those days they didn't know.
