Thanks so much to one and all for the advice.

I'm working through it slowly. My main problem is I don't know the
layout of this drive (new client).

I know hda1 is swap and hda2 is the root/main partition.
Anyway to find out if there are any others? Just mount them in sequence?

Chroot will be the way to go once I've figured this out and then I can
fix/remove/reload Lilo which is what I want to do at this stage (I'll
learn Grub some other time).

Apart from that, /etc/lilo.conf looks like this:

<- contents minus comments ->

lba32
boot=/dev/hda
root=/dev/hda2
#compact
install=/boot/boot-menu.b
map=/boot/map
delay=2
vga=normal
default=Linux
image=vmlinuz
       label=linux
       read-only
image=vmlinuz.old
       label=linuzOLD
       read-only
       optional

<- end of file ->

What I have noticed is that /boot/boot-menu.b does not exist, it's
boot.b only.

Furthermore, dir does not show this file or debian.bmp , but ls lists
them with inverted colours. Commands such as more and vi don't work on
these files 'no such file or directory' - what's that about?
