Probably because the BIOS is so old that it can't see anything larger than 8GB, and anything larger may even cause the system not to POST.

Which MS operating system? If it's XP, guy a cheap second hand box in the Quokka or go to usenet to wa.ads.forsale and post a wanted ad. I'm afraid I don't have any more old systems to offer you for sale at the moment. That said, computer retailers have some pretty good barebones systems available if you already have an OS.
