I have a Samsung 19" running Gnome of Ubuntu and the choosing the right
font really isnt the issue, its getting the Subpixel ordering correct
for your LCD screen. Once that is done all the fonts look really good
and it just comes down to personal preference.

In gnome its under Preferences > Font > Details. There is an equivalent
options in KDE but im not sure exactly where.

Personally I just the Bitstream Vera series of fonts for everything,
very nice fonts when combined with freetype
