If that fails, look at /proc/mounts  - sometimes mtab is wrong.

I noticed on Mac-os that it had an eject button for the hard disk.
I stood back and pressed the button ... and it span down.
How do I tell an umounted hdd to powerdown in Linux? (it's noisy)
