Change back to vesa (as I don't know you're hardware, and vesa should
work even if it's slow).

Your error now is that no S3 cards are found -- once you revert to
vesa, you should be good.

Ubuntu-desktop is a metapackage that drags in all the dependencies
that make up the gnome-ubuntu system. If you don't have it, it's no
wonder you're missing core dependencies....

Otherwise, if you're on kde (kubuntu), you want kubuntu-desktop, or
xubuntu-desktop (get the pattern?)
