[plug] cannot see samba shares or server

I cannot browse a new samba server (on Debian 3.1) nor see the shares from a Windows XP desktop.
I have set in each share 
browseable = Yes
and when I run testparm it shows the shares no errors.

The server has 2 nics, but the firewall is shut down for the moment.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
