Hello again.

Close but not there yet.   Checked and edited the firewall config file to 
use with /sbin/SuSEfirewall2 but it continues to return a blank table - and 
iptables -L hangs.   So re-ran iptables-restore < prev-config and while 
iptables -L still hangs at least it outputs one line "ACCEPT all anywhere 
anywhere"

Server needless to say has an air gap firewall at present :-)
