scroll down to the advanced search section and choose
USB drives in the 'Distribution Category' and
active in the 'Status' section it will return a list of distributions designed 
to boot from a USB stick.
The returned list is at the bottom of the page, so you will have to scroll 
down a long way to see the result.

Anyway using one of these distros may check that it is possible to boot from 
your USB and may supply some hints to get other distros working.
