what is it about skype , why are people using it ?

just the thought of the same people that wrote the software for Kazza
having anything to do with it.... uhhhh
i know ebay bought it now but still,
i thought it was a proprietary protocol and you could not talk to other
VOIP sip users that use the standard sip VOIP like freshtel etc..... ?
and then, i was hearing that there was security and bandwith issues ?

have things changed now ?

i use a standard sip VOIP , a free sign up at freshtel.net
(Australian as far as i know)
works well like the normal landline computer to computer, you can pay
like skype and go out to a landline as well if you want.
also i can call other sip phone users that have accounts with other
providers like sipphone (Singapore) and FWD Free Word Dial-up (UK)
etc..

sipphone accounts using their server work just as well as the freshtel
server.

Winbloze users can install the freshtel provided Firefly software and
that works well for them.

in KDE i use kphone and have had very good results entering the correct
server address and then the correct phone number..
i have an adsl 512 / 128 connection and a friend in perth 255kms away
last year had a 56k dialup connection and that still worked ok.
