Because more and more Internet cafés are installing it, and if, like me, 
you have a daughter overseas, being able to talk at length is very 
satisfying.

All of these other things, may be good for the cause, but if they don't 
work or aren't readily available everywhere, they will be skipped.

The only problem that we have had with Skype on Linux has been to do 
with the usb port. A reboot always fixes it. Skype on WinXP now has 
built in video as well. Still waiting for Linux version.

They may be able to, but you will need to convince Internet café 
proprietors to do so. As Skype is also free, I think you have a 
snowball's chance.
