Just open them in OO.  You can then cut&paste the cells/spreadsheet into
the writer document. Double clicking on it after the insertion gives you
a spreadsheet like window to edit/format the cells - works quite well.
You might do well to upgrade OO though, 1.1.3 is getting on a bit and
the newer versions are much better at importing etc.  2.03 at least.
