You could try the following :

Using the keyboard, type in :

Ctrl + Alt + F1

This will open a console.

If your system allows rootlogin :

at the first prompt type :

root <enter>

at the second prompt type :

<the password for root> <enter>

If your system does NOT allow rootlogin :

at the first prompt type :

<username> <enter>

at the second prompt type :

<the password for username> <enter>

at the third prompt type :

su root <enter>

at the fourth prompt type :

<the password for root> <enter>

This sequence puts you at a console/command line with root privileges.

Beware the power of root.
