[plug] laptop screen resolution in ubuntu

I have an old toshiba satellite 4090 (celeron 400, 128Mb ram, 6gb drive)
that I have installed edubuntu 6.06 on because of its lower hardware
demands. Trouble is, I can't seem to get the screen resolutions I want
- it tops out at 800x600 with a wide border all around.
I've googled and read posts on the ubuntu forums leading me to manually
edit the vsync and hsync rates. I've tried a variety of settings, but
it either makes little difference or I wreck X all together :-(. Also,
there was a howto that spoke of rerunning the configuration by doing
"sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". I set things properly in there,
but still only get a maximum of 800x600. My xorg file has all the right
settings, as far as my reading of posts tells me, but the only
resolution option given to me is 640x480 or 800x600.
BTW: it's a trident card, but no idea what ram it has - and the lcd
monitor is not recognised, just given as a generic lcd. My xorg.conf is
given below for good measure, but note that it is the ***default
file***, and I've tried different vsync and hsync and listed more modes
than given below without success:
