[plug] Detecting an external monitor before X starts

The only real way that I have found that works, esp. with
suspend/hibernate where you dont want to shut down X is to get X to
ignore the EDID monitor info and just use the fixed settings. That way
X doesnt care if a monitor is plugged in or not. Downside is things
like xinerama become useless or a real pain - use clone mode, and look
at either one or the other of the displays, not expect both to be usable
at the same time (i.e., my laptop is a wide display, but most external
monitors and projectors are std 4:3.

Something like:
 Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"

Cant find my old dell laptop xorg.conf but a little reading will get you
there - theres quite a detailed txt file that comes with the nvidia
drivers package that is a great help.

As an aside, my current i915 laptop works with only some versions of the
xorg driver - they dont always seem to ignore the EDID, even when
specifically told not to - grrrrr!
