[plug] Debian Etch, kernel 2.6 and device special files

Hi;

We have just moved from version 2.4 to 2.6 of the kernel. I find that
after the move there are no audio device files. I can make (mknod) new
ones but they will disappear after the next boot.

The vitals are: Debian Etch and kernel 2.6.18-4-686.

Does anybody know how this system is meant to handle audio device
special files?
