I am using the psmouse module for the touchpad on a sony laptop - I just
remove the module when I need to - when booting or suspend/resume using
tuxonice it auto loads the driver so overall its convenient and
fuss-free. Been thinking of using sudo and a desktop icon to allow a 1
click "kill mouse" like I do with some other stuff. I mostly use an
external mouse, but occasionally need the touchpad so doing it this way
is convenient.
