Rather than crossing to the 'dark side' have you tried other distros, 
particularly non-debian ones for the sake of isolating cause of problems? 

You can run one of the many live versions to check hardware recognition,
of course. The only problem with that is specific (ie, non-oss like
nvidia) drivers won't be included. But, it will prove recognition of
other hardware.
