That's what I do, but I don't have the option to decide to "apt-get
dist-upgrade". I can try to do an upgrade from the DVD, but it's usually
a LOT slower than a brand-new install in another partition, and since
disks are laughably cheap these days .....

When you start Synaptic, does the icon "Upgrade distribution" or
whatever it is appear? If so, give it a click and it'll drag you kicking
and screaming onto Jaunty Jackal or whatever it is this time ...  ;-)
