Couldn't you just copy the disk partition from VMware to a real disk?
You'd do that within vmware, booting from a Linux live-CD (image) if 
needed.  Of course you'd have the same issues as when moving a physical
hard disk of partition to a different machine.  (ie none, with Ubuntu at 
least, except maybe needing to reinstall grub.)
