Actually, your solution is what did work - that is exactly what Anne 
did, late last week, and it got it going again.

It hadn't occurred to me, that the button would need to be held down for 
so long. I had initially just pushed it down and then released, and I 
had later held it down for a few seconds, and Anne told me that she had 
just held the button down until the laptop rebooted, and it rebooted 
okay.
