Hello all,

The "PLUG in the pub" Quiz Night last night was a lot of fun. With six
tables playing, we ended up carrying on until around 11pm.

PLUG Quiz Night 2011
The results were:

  * Table 6, called "I am 4", came last with 57 points - Jason N & Steven.
  * Table 4, called "Drop table;", came 5th with 73 points - Daniel H,
    James H, Seb
  * Table 3, name escapes me, came 4th with 75 points - Peter & co.
  * Table 1,called "Not a Number" (NaN), came 3rd with 86.6 points -
    Mark Tearle, Harry and Russell.
  * Table 2, called "UCC", came 2nd with 86.85 points - James A, Bob
    Adamson and Chris.
  * Table 5, called "i", came 1st with 88.5 points - Nick Bannon,
    Alastair Irvine and John M-D.

Yes, part points were awarded for inspiration, accuracy, and pity.
Extra points were added to table 6 due to being just two players, but
they went away with a DVD burner each (thanks to Scott Middleton of
AssureTek) and a copy of "Linux Server Hacks".

Congratulations to Table 5 who won the Boffin's vouchers, and to the UCC
table who won the Yubikeys.

1st prize, table "i"2nc place: table "UCC"
The raffle of the ticket to LCA was taken out by Mark Tearle. James
Henstridge won a prize of a Gaming mouse and mouse mat, thanks again to
Scott Middleton.
LCA Raffle winner: Mark Tearle
A big thank you to the Moon & Sixpence who were ever so helpful in
letting us use the room for free, for putting up the signs and generally
having food and drink available! Thanks to Boffin's for their help on
funding prizes, to Josh and the LCA 2012 team in Ballarat for the LCA
ticket. And of course, thank you to the people who turned up to have a
laugh and play the quiz. Thanks to Patrick Coleman as well for running
around organising and picking up prizes.

On the up side: PLUG got a bunch of membership renewals processed (you
can do this now by cruising through the PLUG web site to the sign up
form, and transferring your membership funds electronically). I think we
got around 8 memberships processed - thank you.

On the funds side - we spent around $275 or so on running the quiz (some
prizes were part paid, some were fully paid, and some were donated, plus
we got pens and small items). Our income from the raffle in the end was
around $71, so we roughly spent $200. I'm not worried about this small
loss; this was a fine turn out and I hope it will serve to invigorate
the membership. If someone else would like to organise an event please
let us know and we'll promote (and fund) what we can to help further the
goals of PLUG.

Thanks also to Russell for the pics.

As mentioned at the end of the night, next meeting is Tuesday 12th April
at UCC at UWA when Harry will be talking about the UWA Physics telescope
he has been working on with an Arduino, a cost Open Hardware
micro-controller.

One last plug (pun intended); we need some volunteers:

  * Workshop/installfest - basic organisation & promotion
  * Speaker wrangler - line up and organise presentations. We have
    contacts, and a few months already lined up.
  * Promotions - if you have a knack for organising promotion
  * Software freedom Day - Onno's running with this, but he'll need some
    help - it's in September
  * Events - some more stuff like the quiz night? BBQ?
  * Projects - got an itch and want to find other people to scratch it
    with? Need some equipment to help get the itch? Come on down!
  * Ideas and directions - tell us what you want PLUG to do. Tell us
    what you DON'T want PLUG to do.

PLUG is looking a lot heathier now (membership wise) than at the
beginning of the year.

  James
