Err... Have you tried <CNTL><ALT><NUM +> or <CNTL><ALT><NUM -> ??
Secondly try running X using the following command:

# X 2>log.txt

Once the screen comes up, kill X using <CNTL><ALT><BACKSPACE> and then review 
the messages in log.txt.
