* Model: FM56-ITU/2
* Solution: Rockwell two chips hardware modem
* Modem/Fax (Kbps): 56K/14.4K
* V.90: YES
* Caller lD/TAM: YES/YES
* PnP: NO
* Interface: ISA
Now ISA is better than PCI fro the following reasons :-
a) You can hard configure it through jumpers (Usually not PnP)
b) Were proliferate in a time when there were no 'winmodems'
c) Would suit old mobo's that have ISA on them
d) Don't use up a valuable PCI slot
and I could go on and on .... (but of course I won't)
Now they maybe a bit hard to come by but if CA were to buy a number in bulk
(say 50 or 100) then maybe a dealer could be persuaded to go through the
rigmarole of doing this. From AOpen's website we find that the Aussie dealer
details are :-

A local AOpen reseller is DMA contact details can be found at :-

You may have to go up the chain for these (i.e. DMA may not be helpful but I
usually find that they are).
DISCLAIMER :-
This is one alternative and these modems are known to work with Linux and it
will get around the CPU utilisation issue you have with lucent based PCI
modems. There are other PCI modems available that do work with Linux and you
may want to look at the building cheap Linux boxes for the links but my
first bet would be to go for the ISA ones and try PCI ones if this doesn't
work out. I really do hope you can get your hands on one of these at leats
to test. You may find that AOpen could be particurly helpful when you
mention what you plan to use them for.
