marked bad sectors, and thence prevented writes and reads to and from 
bad sectors, thus protecting data.

If you still wanted the disk for Win98, that may be a solution.

We have a Seagate 40GB HDD, and no problems with it, and use Seagates as 
preferred disks, with no problems. Our oldest (I believe), is a 454MB 
Seagate HDD, about 12 years old, running as swap disk in the server.
