Hello all,
A (late) reminder that there is a PLUG meeting tomorrow at 7pm (WST) at
City West Lotteries House. *Jeremy Kerr* from OzLabs will be talking
about UEFI and Secure Boot. The talk starts at 7pm - so be there from
around 6:30pm to get a seat. The address is 2 Delhi St, West Perth,
right next to City West train station.

Hopefully we'll be streaming as well at http://icecast.plug.org.au:8000/
from around 6:45pm, with IRC questions on #plug on irc.plug.org.au.
Abstract:
*UEFI is a relatively new standard to define the firmware that your
computer uses during early boot, intended to replace BIOS. UEFI aims
to describe all manner of functionality that may be required to boot
a machine, including filesystem support, networking, and a new
feature called "secure boot".
Secure boot allows a machine's firmware to authenticate binaries
that it loads, to protect against malicious alterations to low-level
system functionality. This requirement that booted code is verified
by the platform has some controversial consequences for Free & Open
Source operating systems.
This talk will consist of a general overview of UEFI, along with a
more detailed look at how secure boot works, and what this will mean
for Linux.*
As usual, this is a free talk so bring friends and anyone else
interested; you're welcomed to pop $20 in the PLUG account ($10
concession/student/etc) for a years membership of PLUG if you'd like to
show your support -- and you're welcome to step up and help out with
communication, reminders, and organisation if you have the time! If you
have a talk you'd like to give, please email committee at plug.org.au -- we
encourage members to give talks - even lightning (5 minute) talks -- as
a platform to discuss relevant topics and practice delivering to an
audience.
As mentioned above, please note that PLUG events are video recorded, and
streamed live online; if you wish to remain out of view then please site
to the rear of the audience; questions for the audience are also
recorded and streamed, in which case you may wish to hold your questions
and comments until after recorded and streaming has finished.
