[plug] Security/Forensics courses in Perth

I'm currently completing the cyber forensics course at Murdoch. It's a good course and the main lecturer, Richard Boddington, seems to have extensive experience in the field.

The course isn't as technical as I expected it to be, mainly the use of commercial program's to gather and analyse data which, to my knowledge, reflect real world application. You would be hard pressed to find any cyber forensic examiner presenting evidence in court based on open source software - generally the software has to meet a certain standard to uphold the chain of custody, proving the data hasn't been modified since its capture.

The theoretical side of the course is pretty full on and he really emphasises and drills in the importance of good reasoning and report writing. All up, I'd recommend the course, it seems to prepare you for real life situations well.

If your friend didn't want to sit through a whole uni course I'd say a SANS FOR course and/or vendor certs - EnCase seems to be a standard in the forensic community.

Cheers
